Starting my reread of this series。 Can't wait to share it with my son when he grows up。 In many ways Watterson was prescient about current events today such as climate change; the encroachment of technology into our personal lives; the monopolizing influence of enormous corporations。 And of course the daily struggles of parenting! You also have to admire Watterson for his pure Integrity。 Starting my reread of this series。 Can't wait to share it with my son when he grows up。 In many ways Watterson was prescient about current events today such as climate change; the encroachment of technology into our personal lives; the monopolizing influence of enormous corporations。 And of course the daily struggles of parenting! Calvin and Hobbes has always been a favorite to me。 The stories of Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes are quite enjoyable and relatable to most of my childhood and are continuously an inspiration to young readers and adults alike。 I really enjoyed the variety of stories through Calvin's imagination that Watterson includes and it does probably speak to many students and children alike。 One of them in particular is Spaceman Spiff。 I especially enjoyed the one about his math test; as Spaceman Spiff, h Calvin and Hobbes has always been a favorite to me。 The stories of Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes are quite enjoyable and relatable to most of my childhood and are continuously an inspiration to young readers and adults alike。 I really enjoyed the variety of stories through Calvin's imagination that Watterson includes and it does probably speak to many students and children alike。 One of them in particular is Spaceman Spiff。 I especially enjoyed the one about his math test; as Spaceman Spiff, he tries to figure out 7 + 5 by crashing planet 7 with planet 5。 And obviously, planet 7 demolishes planet 5 leaving him with the answer 7。 Hence, 7 + 5 = 7 =P HAHA!The series will leave you with some good laughs。 Quite enjoyable for all =) 。。。more

This was a trip down memory lane。 I was introduced to Calvin & Hobbes by an Air Force roommate who sprayed anarchist messages on our dorm room walls。 Later when facing disciplinary action, he sat down with me and told me to take life a bit lightly and handed me one of these books and there I was transported to an inquisitive and mischievous mind that wasn't afraid simply to be, while making not-so-subtle critiques at critique itself。 Needless to say, much later after years of post graduate study This was a trip down memory lane。 I was introduced to Calvin & Hobbes by an Air Force roommate who sprayed anarchist messages on our dorm room walls。 Later when facing disciplinary action, he sat down with me and told me to take life a bit lightly and handed me one of these books and there I was transported to an inquisitive and mischievous mind that wasn't afraid simply to be, while making not-so-subtle critiques at critique itself。 Needless to say, much later after years of post graduate study, I lighten up and remember less convoluted and more adventuresome days sitting with all my worldly belongings halfway across the world, without family, or anyone to call the love of my life, chuckling to myself in some corner and not bothering to make sense of it all。 Had I only put more effort into that not bothering。Will always love Calvin & Hobbes, just as much as I love Wallace and Gromit。 They will always provide those small pleasures in between the seriousness of life (that need not be so serious after all)。 You can ponder the big questions of life without ill-afforded depressions or grave disciplines or study, but with that childlike spontaneity and wonder that throws trouble to the wind。 。。。more

Calvin and Hobbes is one of the best kinetic comics ever drawn, often surpassing adult comics in how well it translates movement to pictures。 It's also a really funny comic, making me repeatedly chuckle out loud。 Besides that, it's beautiful。 Even when the comic can get a little bit repetitive in its art, there are shining examples of detailed strips that outdo almost every comic strip。 It's a shame that the jokes can get a little bit repetitive and that sometimes the setup is this long-winded f Calvin and Hobbes is one of the best kinetic comics ever drawn, often surpassing adult comics in how well it translates movement to pictures。 It's also a really funny comic, making me repeatedly chuckle out loud。 Besides that, it's beautiful。 Even when the comic can get a little bit repetitive in its art, there are shining examples of detailed strips that outdo almost every comic strip。 It's a shame that the jokes can get a little bit repetitive and that sometimes the setup is this long-winded fantasy that sometimes doesn't really add much to the punchline。 I repeatedly glazed over walls of text in Calvin's fantasy world, only to have the joke still land for the brief moment we return to reality。 These are minor complaints though。 Calvin and Hobbes is fun and worth reading。 I do recommend getting this if you're a fan, but also to give it a more critical read than you did in your childhood。 。。。more

One day, I read the first strip of Calvin and Hobbes (not in the papers, in a book, though), and I absolutely fell in love with it。 One of the best things about this comic strip is that the characters are so lovable, and this combined with hilarious plots is utter magic。After zooming through almost all of the Calvin and Hobbes books/collections, I received The Complete Calvin and Hobbes。 When I had read The Tenth Anniversary Calvin and Hobbes I immensely enjoyed the commentary, so I was glad tha One day, I read the first strip of Calvin and Hobbes (not in the papers, in a book, though), and I absolutely fell in love with it。 One of the best things about this comic strip is that the characters are so lovable, and this combined with hilarious plots is utter magic。After zooming through almost all of the Calvin and Hobbes books/collections, I received The Complete Calvin and Hobbes。 When I had read The Tenth Anniversary Calvin and Hobbes I immensely enjoyed the commentary, so I was glad that the first of the four-book set (two to three years of strips or so per book) contained a delightful commentary。 Reading Watterson's words completely changed my entire perspective on comic strips, and I am extremely glad that I have this book, along with other Calvin and Hobbes books。Five stars。For all ages。 。。。more

Oh Calvin and Hobbes。 I could reread these comic books over and over again, and never tire of the hilarious antics of a six-year-old boy and his pet-but-not-pet tiger。 Bill Watterson is really genius! After nearly ten years of daily comics, Bill Watterson hung up his pencil in 1995 and capped off his critically acclaimed strip, Calvin & Hobbes。 Ten years later, Watterson worked with Andrews McNeel Publishing to put out a complete box set (three volumes in hardback / four in paperback)。 The result is a gorgeous collection worthy of one of the best, most consistent strips around。Calvin & Hobbes began when I was just two years old and ended just before I turned twelve, so given that I wasn’t gra After nearly ten years of daily comics, Bill Watterson hung up his pencil in 1995 and capped off his critically acclaimed strip, Calvin & Hobbes。 Ten years later, Watterson worked with Andrews McNeel Publishing to put out a complete box set (three volumes in hardback / four in paperback)。 The result is a gorgeous collection worthy of one of the best, most consistent strips around。Calvin & Hobbes began when I was just two years old and ended just before I turned twelve, so given that I wasn’t grabbing the newspaper every day as a kid, I completely missed out on Watterson’s legendary run。 With Watterson’s hard stance against licensing any of his work, there was no other way for Calvin’s world to enter my own outside of the source material。 No cartoon show, no movies, no merchandise – nothing。 After hearing for years that I should seek out and do a deep dive into Calvin & Hobbes, I took advantage of a sale and picked up the set earlier this year。This is about as perfect a series as I can imagine。 Watterson strikes the perfect tone between childhood wonder and adult perspective。 The relationship between Calvin and his stuffed tiger, Hobbes, is the template for a perfect friendship; they have each other’s back, fight and make up and genuinely bring out the best in one another。 I know that’s a little strange when you’re talking about a boy and his imagination, but Calvin and Hobbes’ partnership is one I could continue to read for years had Watterson not stopped in the mid-90s。The publisher did a wonderful job with the presentation having the daily strips retain their traditional black and white coloring as they’re laid over a slightly yellowed background。 It allows his work to pop off the page。 The full-page Sunday strips are bright and colorful and brilliantly restored。 This is especially excellent in the autumn comics where the reds, yellows and browns help to bring my favorite season to life。 I almost wish Watterson had at least allowed some licensing if only so I could get a big print to hang on the wall of my living room。While the box set will set you back over a cool one hundred dollars, it’s well worth the money。 This isn’t something released to cash in on nostalgia; it's a lovingly crafted tribute to one of the best comic strips you could possibly read。 。。。more
